The Certificates in General Education for Adults (CGEA) are designed to provide students with general education skills in the areas of reading and writing, oral communication, numeracy and mathematics; along with modules which are called general curriculum options which may include computers, spelling and/or grammar.

The courses aim to provide learners with:

  • an accredited general education course at AQF level I, 2 or 3
  • skill development in reading, writing and numeracy
  • skill development in a variety of areas to meet personal  needs and facilitate participation in the community, or other workplace and further education and training

What employment opportunities will I have?
The courses develop workforce re-entry skills.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?
The courses are designed to:

  • Assist adults returning to study after a break from formal study
  • Provide the opportunity to improve employability skills
  • Help build the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to go on to further study

What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Students can progress to VCE, Certificate IV, Diploma, or further education studies

Can I apply?
You can apply if you:

  • Are over 18 years of age
  • have been away from full-time education for at least 12 months
  • can read basic texts like a newspaper and can write a paragraph
  • wish to do further study

How will I be selected for this course?
There are no formal entry requirements for students wishing to undertake these courses. Students would be expected to have some competency in oral English language for the Certificate level I level.

All applicants will be asked to meet with a tutor for an initial assessment and placement interview.
The student’s skill level will determine at what level the program is entered.

Recognition of prior learning
Recognition of prior learning may be available based on skills and knowledge acquired by the applicant through previous study, as in articulation, informal or formal learning or from work and/or life experience.

These programs introduce clients to skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing plus areas of Grammar, Pronunciation and Vocabulary
